Abstrak

Digital transformation has become a central strategic agenda for organizations; however, its failure rate remains relatively high because it is often approached as a technology-driven initiative rather than a leadership- and ecosystem-based strategic process. This article aims to develop a conceptual framework that explains the role of strategic leadership in shaping ecosystem vision as a foundation for successful digital transformation. Using a qualitative conceptual approach, this study synthesizes the literature on strategic management, strategic leadership, and business ecosystems. The analysis reveals that strategic leaders’ cognitive needs for openness and diversity influence the types of interactions they establish with ecosystem partners, namely participative, selective, collaborative, and exclusive interactions. These interaction types trigger changes in the differentiation and integration levels of strategic leaders’ mental models, which in turn shape the types of complementarities envisioned within digital ecosystems, ranging from generic to supermodular complementarities. This article contributes theoretically by extending strategic leadership perspectives to the ecosystem level and offers practical guidance for organizational leaders in designing adaptive, collaborative, and value co-creating ecosystem visions for digital transformation.
